Marco Berardi has been a Senior Researcher (Primo Ricercatore) at CNR-IRSA (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto di Ricerca sulle Acque) since January 2023. From December 2023, he has held the National Scientific Qualification for Associate Professor in Numerical Analysis (“Abilitazione II Fascia, Settore Concorsuale 01/A5 – Analisi Numerica”). He obtained both his Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Bari Aldo Moro, with a research focus on numerical methods for ordinary differential equations with discontinuous right-hand sides.
At CNR-IRSA, his research activity lies at the intersection of applied mathematics, hydrology, and environmental engineering. His work focuses in particular on the modeling and numerical simulation of water flow in porous and unsaturated media. His research interests include soil moisture dynamics, irrigation optimization, root water uptake, and groundwater recharge.
He has led the CNR-IRSA unit in several national and regional research projects (PRIN, PON-MUR, PSR Puglia).
He is a member of SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), SIMAI (Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale), and GNCS-INdAM (Gruppo Nazionale per il Calcolo Scientifico, Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica).
He has served as Guest Editor for several special issues in Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (Elsevier) and Engineering with Applications (Springer).
He currently serves as a reviewer for numerous international journals, including: Computers and Mathematics with Applications, Computational Geosciences, Applied Numerical Mathematics, Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, Water Resources Research, Advances in Water Resources, Journal of Hydrology, Vadose Zone Journal, Journal of Hydrologic Engineering, Soil and Tillage Research, Ocean Engineering, Results in Engineering, Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment, and Water and Environment Journal.
